While in treatment, you will be assigned a primary mental health therapist who will meet with you 1-2 times a week, and a family therapist to assist you in creating a plan, developing healthy communication and boundaries, and helping repair damage caused by the disease of addiction.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or “CBT”

In short, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence- based practice which focusses on changing someone’s behavior by learning to modify dysfunctional or harmful thought patterns and habits. This approach can be particularly beneficial for people with substance abuse issues since there are significant patterns caused by negative and destructive thoughts due to addiction. Rewiring these thoughts by creating positive reactions and solution- based thinking is beneficial for treatment.

The focus of CBT is based on three areas of thought called the “cognitive triad” in which how the client’s automatic thoughts of themselves, the world, and future events.

In session with a CBT therapist, a client may be given a series of activities which include working on the identification and awareness of beliefs that lead to destructive behavior. They may work on:

  • Understanding reasons behind negative behavior
  • The relationship between feelings and thoughts
  • How to make the initial changes of an existing destructive belief system
  • Identifying tools to help change perspective
  • Develop a deeper insight and awareness
  • Create the needed mindfulness and focus towards automatic thoughts

Examples of common behavior among addicts are black and white thinking, catastrophizing, and minimalizing circumstances and events.

CBT is an evidence-based practice and has shown positive results with Addictions, Depression Disorders, Anxiety and Bipolar Disorder.
