As part of our heroin addiction treatment program BeWell Recovery Centers also features certain outdoor activities, which will ensure not only psychological but also physical rehabilitation.

Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms

Heroin withdrawal is not same for any two individuals, therefore supervised detoxification can help minimize relapse risks and medical support in the event of complications. Heroin withdrawal symptoms may vary depending on a number of factors:

  • Amount of drug used
  • Duration of addiction
  • Tolerance severity
  • Mental/physical other illnesses

Although withdrawal symptoms of heroin addiction are not considered life-threatening compared to other highly addictive drugs, it still is an unpleasant procedure and sometimes can trigger immediate relapse to alleviate emotional and physical distress caused by detox.

Mild Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Tearing
  • Runny nose
  • Sweats
  • Chills
  • Yawning a lot
  • Muscle and bone aches

Moderate Symptoms

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Tremors

Heroin Detox Timeline

Heroin leaves one’s bloodstream quickly. In general the timeline of heroin withdrawal symptoms during the detoxification period start within the 6-12 hours of the last dose, peak in 2-3 days and last 5-10 days in total depending on how much the drug was used, how dependent the body is on the drug and how it was abused.

DAY 1-3

The first few days of heroin detox are in general the most difficult ones to get through and are to be supervised by an intake specialist and professional to avoid immediate relapse. Some of the symptoms during this period are muscle aches and pain. Depending on the length of drug abuse some may also experience diarrhea, loss of appetite, insomnia, anxiety and/or panic attacks are also common.

DAY 3-6

The following three to six days are relatively less difficult to handle. This is the time when the professional interference and support is required. Individuals who are trying to overcome heroin addiction must properly eat to boost the immune system and withstand the detoxification. Some of the common symptoms during this period are shivers, abdominal cramping, and vomiting.

DAY 6 & BEYOND

If you have reached day 6 in your detoxification process, you are on the right track and the general discomfort is behind, although some of the withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea and anxiety, may still persist.

Heroin Outpatient Drug Rehab vs Inpatient Drug Rehab

Outpatient drug rehab services are designed mostly for those individuals who have not totally lost control of their lives and are not extremely addicted to alcohol or drugs. In case of this, individuals who undergo outpatient rehab service can easily continue their everyday routines, go to work each day, meet family members and friends. Like any other forms of rehabilitation for substance use and abuse, heroin addiction and treatment will start gradually adjusting the body and mind to a lack of the drug. In most of the cases the temptation to relapse is strong, therefore it is never recommended to start heroin detoxification alone or with someone who never underwent medical training. Cold turkey detoxing can be an unpleasant procedure both for the addict and his or her loved ones, with various outcomes and the temptation to relapse may become stronger over time, therefore medical intervention and medical supervision at an impatient center may reduce the discomfort and safeguard from relapse.

Aftercare & Lasting Recovery

Once through the detox and rehab programs and back to the familiar environment and normal life free from heroin use, you or your loved one will still require follow-up care, which may include meetings with individual therapist or involvement in support groups. Furthermore, families and relatives of former heroin addicts will also participate in some of the sessions to support the changes in relations and develop stronger bonds between the former addict and his or her dear ones.

The length of aftercare depends on the individual case. Some studies show those individuals who have participated in the after-rehab program are more likely to stay sober and avoid relapses compared to the ones who skipped the final step of the program. At BeWell Recovery Centers our goal is not merely heroin detox and rehabilitation, it’s bigger. We aim at transforming lives, leading our patients to a happier and more rewarding life. Detox and recovery from heroin abuse brings a lasting feeling of happiness and contentment, which will not disappear in a few hours.
